Mainline Information Systems weaves family into workplace

Long hours are a part of the job for employees scattered nationwide who work for Mainline Information Systems.

CEO Rick Kearney said the company tries to make up for time lost with the family with a night out on the town with dinner and a movie or a staycation at a hotel.

"We feel like the employee and their family work for us, so we include them in the activities at the office," Kearney said.

Mainline is one of 10 Tallahassee-based companies highlighted by the Family Friendly Workplace Initiative for going above and beyond to foster a family-friendly workplace.

The series is a partnership between the city of Tallahassee and the Tallahassee Democrat. It stems from the Family First Initiative launched in 2015 by Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum.

The Family Friendly Workplace and Culture Task Force —  a cross-section of business leaders, parents and childcare providers from the private and public sector — wants local businesses to answer a 67-item yes-or-no questionnaire. The survey can be taken here.

Scores of three to five stars will be given based on responses. Businesses and nonprofits will be offered mentorship opportunities for employers who want to appeal to parents in the workforce.

An April 11 reception will celebrate employers who are doing exceptional work and helping others improve.

What's a fun thing your company does?

Every year we have a bonfire and bouncy houses. This year was a "Dr. Seuss" theme. We have ice cream socials where they can bring their kids and pizza parties. Weekend parties at the beach.

How flexible is the workplace?

We have about 430 employees who work in the field and they work from home.
