THREE STARS
Teresa Conroy, Sr., John Paul II
•The senior golfer shot a career-best 5-under par 67 at Southwood Golf Club last week to win a District 1-1A title. Conroy’s round included six birdies and a bogey, leading the Panthers as a team to another district championship.
TWO STARS
Feleipe Franks, Sr., Wakulla
•The senior quarterback came up big in a 20-13 win over Rickards to clinch a District 2-5A title. Franks threw three touchdowns at lengths of 40, 15 and 50 yards, including two in the second half to put the War Eagles back in front. Franks has now thrown 17 touchdowns versus just two interceptions on the year.
ONE STAR
Cole Wentworth, Sr., Taylor County
•The senior golfer shot a 1-over par round of 73 at Southwood last week, sinking an eight-foot birde putt on No. 18 to win a district title, the first in over seven years. Taylor County also won a team title in the process, something the school hadn’t done before, making even more impressive the feat.
Mount Rush-more
It’s a race to the finish for the area’s rushing title. With a 191-yard, two-touchdown performance in a win over Mayo Lafayette, Madison County senior running back Patrick Brown has taken the lead. Brown has 862 yards to the 842 of Chiles junior Shane Sanders. Not far behind that is East Gadsden senior Stephon Simpkins with 812 after a 133-yard game against Rutherford.
Keeping chase is Godby quarterback Darius Bradwell (714), NFC running back Korey Charles (637) and Madison quarterback Kentwan Daniels (629). Charles has burst onto the scene lately since starting the first three games at wide receiver. He has 211, 134 and 192 yards in his last three games.
Also over 500 yards for the year are Wakulla junior Demarcus Lindsey and John Paul II’s Mark Woodend, both with outsides shot to join the fray with a strong close in remaining games plus the playoffs.
Monticello mayhem
The Jefferson County football team wrapped up a playoff spot last week, its first in four years, with a 20-14 overtime win over Hamilton County. Kean Thomas Jr.’s second touchdown catch of the game was the game winner for the Tigers.
Quarterback Laxavier Patterson threw three touchdown passes and rushed for nearly 100 yards, while Zoron Wade led the defense with six tackles and two sacks.
To put it Blount-ly
•Blountstown quarterback Chasen Roulhac has had a senior season full of constency. Roulhac threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another as the Tigers won 42-0 at Freeport, the team’s seventh consecutive win. He has now thrown for 961 yards on the year with 10 touchdowns versus just one interception, but he’s also rushed for 284 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Lookout also for Blountstown’s defense, led by junior Trevon Matthews, who has 81 tackles on the year, including 10 for loss and six sacks.
Middle School XC Championships
Holy Comforter Episcopal School hosted the Middle School Cross Country Championships on its hilly 3k course last week. HCE’s boys and girls both won as teams, the boys defeating Maclay by 30 points.
HCE eighth grader Trey Jackson was the highest local finisher in second at 10:54, edging out Maclay eighth grader Johnny McClure, who ran 11:02.
For the girls, Deerlake Middle’s Emily Molen ran a meet record 11:22 to win, followed up some 40 seconds later by Swift Creek Middle’s twin sisters Alyson and Megan Churchill going 2-3, respectively. Hannah Hosay in fourth place was the highest HCE girls runner.
Dual-season over
The high school swimming dual-meet season is completed and schools are now onto the postseason. On the boys’ side, Chiles sophomore John Yambor-Maul leads the area in four events (50, 100, 200 and 500 freestyle), while freshman Ryland Sun is out front in three (200 IM, 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke).
For the girls, it’s a four-way tie up top with Chiles junior Morgan Ayers and sophomore Stephanie Holmes along with Leon sisters Claire and Olivia Kercheval-Roig each leading two events. Ayers is holding down the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, Holmes the 200 and 500 free, senior Claire Kercheval-Roig the 50 free and 100 back, and sophomore Olivia Kercheval-Roig the 100 fly and 100 free.
