Tesla charging stations are coming to Tallahassee International Airport.

Tesla charging stations will be installed at Tallahassee International Airport early next year as part of the city’s plan to make the facility more attractive to travelers.

An Oct. 5 Tallahassee Democrat article indicated Tesla, the producer of all-electric, zero-emission vehicles, had chosen Tallahassee to install a supercharging station in the Village Commons Shopping Center on Thomasville Road near Steinmart, Shoe Station and Applebee’s.

After reading the article, city officials inquired whether the California-based company was interested in setting up a charging station at the airport.

“We thought it was natural for the airport. It’s at no cost to the taxpayer,” said City Commissioner Scott Maddox, who’s taken the lead on pushing airport improvements. “It would provide another service for our citizens flying in and out of the Tallahassee.”

The airport, which earned its international designation on June 25, is undergoing improvements to create more amenities and attractions, which may ultimately help in lowering fares and attracting new service and carriers. Improvements include terminal, baggage claim area and restaurant renovations. A Tesla charging station is just one aspect in the infrastructure puzzle that includes serving other electric cars in the future.

The airport’s charging stations will be in the terminal’s parking lot, and they will be designed to serve as a Telsa-specific, Level 2 charging stations. The airport will be among more than 1,000 charging stations partners worldwide, according to the city.

“We are always on the lookout for things that will improve the overall customer experience,” Aviation Director Chris Curry said. “Just because we’re a small airport that doesn’t mean we can’t have all of the latest technology and amenities that our customers deserve.

With that thought in mind, our entire plan has been devoted to creating a better overall customer experience at the airport.”
