Today travelers at Tallahassee International Airport will notice construction work in the first phase in modernizing the dated terminal.

Upgrades, dubbed as the Terminal Modernization Project, include tearing out the baggage claim area that will go on until March and a refreshed lobby. The project is priced at $10.5 million and is provided grants, agreements with TSA and local funding.

The next construction phase will be adding amenities, which are designed to transform the terminal into a more inviting space that reflects Tallahassee and its assets. The entire project should be completed by October 2016.

“During construction, it will be business as usual,” said Chris Curry, director of aviation, in a statement. “We ask that passengers pardon our dust, and we will continue to keep the high quality of service that our passengers expect.”

The airport terminal, first built in Dec. 3, 1989, for $33 million. New designs promise a bolder and more vibrant look.

Slick wood floors will be installed in concession areas renamed Live Oak Bar and Grille and Monroe Street Beer and Wine. High top tables and bar stools will add to the modern look officials are going for.

Teal green, warm and cobalt blue, black, garnet and burnt orange terrazzo tiles will replace large white tiles streaked in gray along the main walkway.

The walkway will be embossed with symbols representing Tallahassee: the state of Florida, logos for FAMU, Florida State University and Tallahassee Community College, all done in their school colors.
